The Quebec Soccer Federation (QSF) had banned Sikhs’ from wearing turbans during matches. The Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) suspended the QSF for their actions and stood up for the Sikhs’ rights.
Reports have now come in that the Brossard football team have also joined the fight against this injustice, by donning turbans in a game. Ihab Leheta, the team’s coach, instructed his players to wear turbans during a game as he believes that his role is not only instilling a love for the game in his young protégés, but also teaching them some life lessons — such as speaking out when they witness injustice.
Despite no medical proof that the turbans are a threat to other players, the QSF banned Sikhs’ from wearing turbans while playing, which made the Sikh community furious.
According to reports, a city councillor in Montreal is planning to denounce the Federation as he is disgusted by the QSF’s ethics.
“I asked them what was more important than this game,” Leheta said Monday in an interview. “One said school, another said family, and then someone said injustice.”
“I told them you can either say: ‘It’s not my problem,’ or you could decide to do something to help out.”
