President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski did not reveal how Holt suffered the injury.
Holt, 30, who hit seven home runs with a .774 OPS in 109 games last season, is off to a slow start in 2019, with only one hit in 16 at-bats, and seven strikeouts. He had started four games at second and one game at shortstop.

The team also announced that reliever Brian Johnson has been placed on the IL with left elbow inflammation. After two scoreless one-inning outings to start the season, Johnson has given up 10 hits and eight earned runs in 3 2/3 innings across his last two appearances.
In corresponding moves, Boston recalled infielder/outfielder Tzu-Wei Lin and right-hander Marcus Walden from their Triple-A affiliate in Pawtucket.
